SIG P229 Pistols

The SIG P229 is SIG’s compact DA/SA 9mm. The P229 takes the P226 idea and shortens the slide and barrel for a compact metal-frame carry gun. This is a P229 alloy-frame 9mm, not a full-size P226 and not a P365. These pistols ship to a licensed FFL.

The P229 keeps the traditional SIG hammer, a decocker on DA/SA models, and a metal-frame feel in a smaller package than the P226. It is a different design from polymer-frame SIG pistols such as the P320 and P365. These P229 pistols are 9mm. Magazine capacity is 15 or 10 rounds depending on the exact model.

How the P229 Differs from the P226

On current Elite 9mm pistols, SIG lists a 3.9-inch barrel and 7.1-inch overall length for the P229, versus a 4.4-inch barrel and 7.7-inch overall length for the full-size P226. Sight radius is 5.7 inches on the P229 Elite Compact and 6.3 inches on the P226 Elite. SIG lists the same 1.5-inch width and 5.5-inch height on both of those Elite pistols. Elite, Legion, and Enhanced Elite

The P229 Elite Compact 15-round and the 10-round Elite Compact share a black Nitron slide, hard-coat anodized alloy frame, one-piece E2 grip, SIGLITE night sights, Short Reset Trigger, beavertail, and SIG accessory rail. Both are optic-ready DA/SA pistols without a manual safety. They differ in the magazines in the box: two 15-round or two 10-round steel magazines.

The P229 Enhanced Elite California-compliant pistol keeps Elite ergonomics, SIGLITE sights, the E2 grip, and the Short Reset Trigger, and it ships with two 10-round magazines. It is not optic-ready. It does not use the current Elite Compact optic-ready slide.

Legion P229 pistols add a Legion Gray finish, black G10 grips with the Legion medallion, X-RAY3 day/night sights, three magazines, a solid steel guide rod, and further grip and control work. Current Legion R2 models are optic-ready with SIG’s PRO footprint. The Legion DA/SA Massachusetts-compliant pistol uses a P-SAIT trigger and a decocker. The Legion SAO Massachusetts-compliant pistol and the Legion SAO 10-round pistol use a single-action flat trigger and a manual safety.

DA/SA, SAO, and Optic-Ready Slides

DA/SA models fire the first shot with a longer double-action pull if the hammer is down, then single-action shots until you decock. SAO Legion models use a single-action trigger only and include a manual safety. These Elite Compact pistols are DA/SA and are not offered with a manual safety.

Current Elite Compact and Legion R2 pistols are optic-ready; a red-dot sight is not installed. Legion R2 slides use SIG’s PRO footprint, which matches SIG ROMEO1PRO-pattern sights. SIG lists the Elite Compact as optic-ready without naming a footprint, so the exact cut and any adapter plate should be confirmed for the sight you intend to mount. The Enhanced Elite CA pistol is not optic-ready.

Choosing a SIG P229

Choose an Elite Compact if you want the black E2-grip DA/SA P229 with an optic-ready slide and either 15-round or 10-round magazines. Choose a Legion model if you want G10 grips, X-RAY3 sights, Legion Gray finish, three magazines, and a PRO optic cut. Choose DA/SA for the traditional decocker system, or SAO if you want a single-action trigger and a manual safety. Choose the Enhanced Elite CA pistol when you need that California-compliant 10-round Enhanced Elite configuration without an optic cut.
