Glock 17 vs 19: Which 9mm Should You Buy?

People argue Glock 17 vs 19 like they are different machines. They are the same 9mm, the same Safe Action trigger, and the same controls. The 19 is the compact gun. The 17 is the full-size gun. The split is grip length and slide length. Width barely moves.

The 19s and 17s we stock right now are Gen6. That size split has been the same for decades. Gen6 adds a palm swell, a thumb rest, Gen6 texture, an enlarged beavertail, an undercut trigger guard, a flat-faced trigger, and Glock’s Optic Ready System with three plates. After the numbers, each listing is a magazine, optic, or barrel package on one of those two frames.

In This Guide

Grip length: 5.04 in. vs 5.47 in.

You feel the difference in the grip first. Height with a magazine is 5.04 in. on the Glock 19 Gen6 and 5.47 in. on the Glock 17 Gen6. That is 0.43 in. of extra magazine body in your hand, and it is why a 17-round Glock 17 magazine hangs below a 19 if you drop one in.

Standard Glock 19 magazines are 15-round. Standard Glock 17 magazines are 17-round. Those two extra rounds live in that extra grip. The 17 is the easier wrap for larger hands. The 19’s shorter grip is the part that prints less under a shirt.

The magazines interchange. A 15-round Glock 19 magazine works in a Glock 17; it sits short in the magwell. A 17-round Glock 17 magazine works in a Glock 19; the extra length hangs below the grip. Glock makes 24-round magazines for these guns. We also stock 10-round Glock 19 and Glock 17 pistols for states that require them. Spare magazines sit on the Glock magazines page.

Width is almost the same. A Glock 19 Gen6 is 1.35 in. wide. A Glock 17 Gen6 is 1.34 in. wide. Slide width is 1.00 in. on both. The 19 is compact because the grip and slide are shorter. You still have a double-stack 9mm in your hand.

Slide length: 6.85 in. vs 7.32 in.

The slide is the other half of the size split. A Glock 19 Gen6 slide is 6.85 in. A Glock 17 Gen6 slide is 7.32 in. That is 0.47 in. of extra slide on the 17.

The barrels follow that. The 19 uses a 4.02 in. barrel. The 17 uses a 4.49 in. barrel. Overall length is 7.28 in. on the 19 and 7.95 in. on the 17. That is 0.67 in. more pistol in the holster.

Sight radius on the polymer sights is 6.18 in. on the 19 and 6.65 in. on the 17. The longer 17 slide gives you more sight radius and a little more barrel ahead of the trigger guard. The 19’s shorter slide is the easier gun to hide on the belt and to draw from under a cover garment.

Glock 17 vs 19 hard numbers

These are Glock’s current US Gen6 numbers for the standard iron-sight pistols. Threaded barrels and factory optic packages change weight and length, so read the listing on the pistol you actually want.

If you want a 19 slide on a 17 grip

Some people want the Glock 19 slide and the Glock 17 grip. That mixed size is a Glock 45 or a Glock 19X. Both put a G19-length slide on a G17-length frame, use 17-round magazines as standard, and measure 7.44 in. overall and 5.47 in. tall.

The Glock 19X is the coyote crossover, with a lanyard loop on the original guns. The Glock 45 is the black compact crossover. Gen6 G45 pistols use the same three-plate ORS set as the 17 and 19. Shop those families if the mixed size is what you actually want.

How to pick

Start with the grip. If the gun has to hide, take the 19. If it lives on a belt, in a bag, or next to the bed, take the 17. You keep the extra grip and two extra rounds in a flush magazine.

Then pick the magazine that matches your state: 15-round or 17-round, or 10-round where you need it. After that, pick plates, a factory Aimpoint COA, a threaded barrel, or a factory EOTech on the 19s that include one.

The Glock 19 and Glock 17 collections are the two places to look, or use the Glock pistols hub. Handguns ship to a licensed FFL.

Glock 17 vs 19 FAQs

What’s the difference between a Glock 17 and 19?

Both are 9mm Glock pistols with the same Safe Action trigger. The 17 is the full-size gun: 4.49 in. barrel, 7.32 in. slide, 7.95 in. overall, 5.47 in. tall with a magazine, and 17-round magazines as standard. The 19 is the compact gun: 4.02 in. barrel, 6.85 in. slide, 7.28 in. overall, 5.04 in. tall, and 15-round magazines as standard. Width is almost the same, 1.34 in. on the 17 and 1.35 in. on the 19.

How many rounds does a Glock 19 hold?

Standard Glock 19 magazines are 15-round. Optional 17- and 24-round magazines work in a Glock 19; the longer magazines extend below the grip. We also stock 10-round Glock 19 pistols.

How many rounds does a Glock 17 hold?

Standard Glock 17 magazines are 17-round. Glock makes optional 24-round magazines for the 17. We also stock 10-round Glock 17 pistols.

Do Glock 17 magazines work in a Glock 19?

Yes. A 17-round Glock 17 magazine locks into a Glock 19 and hangs below the grip. A 15-round Glock 19 magazine works in a Glock 17 and sits short in the magwell.

Is a Glock 19 good for concealed carry?

The Glock 19 is Glock’s compact 9mm, and that shorter grip and slide are why so many people carry one. Height with a magazine is 5.04 in. Slide length is 6.85 in. Width is still a double-stack 9mm, 1.35 in. on Gen6.

Can you conceal a Glock 17?

Yes. The 17 is 0.43 in. taller and 0.47 in. longer in the slide, so it is the bulkier of the two to hide. People who carry one are usually trading that extra size for the full grip and the 17-round flush magazine.

Specs were checked against Glock’s US G19 Gen6 and G17 Gen6 product pages. This is a specification-based buying comparison, not a claimed range test.
